I’m told that we get close to fifty thousand people for ashes on Ash Wednesday [at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral], that it’s round-the-clock. What’s that all about? From a worldly point of view, that could be ridiculed, that here are these crazy robots who once a year have some strange tie to their church where they get smudged. We know that’s not true. We know that somewhere deep down people are saying, “I’m back holding my mother’s hand crossing the street, because she’s going to take care of me and get me safely to the other side.
